Project: San Diego Convention Center
Consulting Engineer: Syska & Hennessey
Mechanical Contractor: Southland Industries
Scope of work
CMS worked with Syska & Hennessey to design the air handling system for the 2001 expansion of the convention center, which increased the total area of exhibition, prefunction, and meeting rooms in the facility to over 1.7 million square feet. The total air quantity supplied by the 40 Energy Labs, Inc. custom air handling units in the expansion is over 1,600,000 cfm.
For the air handling system design, we used Energy Labs, Inc. custom air handling units with plug fans and variable frequency drives to design a space and energy efficient system, which also provided excellent acoustic performance. In addition, specially sized duct silencer banks were used which fit directly into the supply and return air openings of the air handling units to further enhance the acoustic performance. Also, by providing factory installation and wiring of temperature control panels, actuators, sensors, and smoke detectors we were able to save the mechanical and temperature control contractors significant installation time and money.
CMS also provided all of the air handling equipment and duct silencers for the construction of the original portion of the convention center, which was completed in 1988.
